Cranford Charges Past Union Catholic on the Court

Webb leads the way with 16 points.
By Mike Curci

The streak continues.

After an opening night loss to Governor Livingston, the Cranford girls' basketball team won its fifth straight game, rolling past Union Catholic 38-21 Thursday night in Cranford.

Senior point guard Jamie Webb led the Cougars offensively with 16 points, while Morgan Miller added 10 points, eight of them coming in the first quarter, which included a pair of three-pointers.

"We're doing really well," said Miller. "We're playing well as a team and we just have to keep being aggressive, not having lapses on defense because that's where we're messing up, letting the other team get back into it and it winds up being closer than it should."

The Lady Cougars took an 11-3 lead through the first quarter, and led 18-13 at the half, before the Vikings cut the lead to one early in the third stanza. Cranford knew then they had to pick it up defensively.

"The second half is where we had a little lapse," said Webb. "We were only up by one, we started to pick it up, our full-court man defense helped us a lot, that's how we won."

"I couldn't be happier with the way the girls played," said head coach Jackie Huber. "The first half was not our kind of tempo. Union Catholic made us work on defense and that's why we came out with more intensity in the second half and that's when we started controlling the game."

"We're working really well as a team," said Webb. "We're doing all the little things, like our coach always tells us, rebound the ball, make passes, and just try and play as a team."

"Off the court, we're all good friends," said Miller. "We like being around each other, so that always helps on the court if you have good chemistry off the court."

"I see girls that want it," said Huber. "Every single time they step on the floor, they give 110 percent. They're fighting every single game, regardless if they don't get the calls they want, they're going back on the other end and doing what they need to do to make this a winning basketball program."

There's a feeling amongst this team, that something special could be in the making.

"I think everyone wants to be No. 1 in the county," said Miller. "That's just a goal of everybody's to do the best we can. I think we all know we have the potential to be the best."

And while the Cougars know it's best to take it one game at a time, they also know that No. 1 will most likely go through Roselle Catholic, who the Cougars take on a week from Saturday. It can't come soon enough.

"I'm excited to play Roselle Catholic, as are the girls," said Huber. "We beat them by 11 last year and gave them their first loss. It's going to be a tough game, it's going to be a good game, the team who hustles, and works the hardest on defense will come out on top."

"We played them last year, lost the first time, won the second time and lost by one in the counties," said Miller. "I think we're pretty evenly matched up and it's just going to be who wants it more."

Right now, the Lady Cougars have wanted it more every time, and the results are showing on the scoreboard.
