Senior forward Diana Venezia had a career-high 31 points along with 17 rebounds, two blocks and two steals to pace Westfield to a 43-26 victory over Cranford yesterday in Cranford.
Westfield (12-7) has now won seven straight games and 10 of its last 11. Cranford had defeated Westfield, 46-40 in Westfield on Jan. 12.
The victory was also the 100th for 11th-year head coach Joe Marino, who led Westfield to its only Union County Tournament title in 2008.
“I really can’t pinpoint why we’re playing better,” said Venezia. “But everybody is doing their part and contributing.”
Westfield is the seventh seed for this year's UCT and will play second-seeded Summit in the quarterfinal round tomorrow at Roselle Catholic at 6 p.m. Summit is the only team to defeat Westfield in its last 11 games, earning a 44-42 decision on a last-second shot.
“We lost to them at the buzzer and we’re looking forward to playing them again,” said Venezia, who is averaging 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds this winter. “The fact that its in the countys should make it much more intense.”
Amanda Markowski added six points and three assists and Charlotte Lorentzen totaled six points, four rebounds and three assists for Westfield, which led, 17-10, at the half. Danielle Gross paced Cranford with nine points.
